Astaxanthin is a natural substance, belongs to the category of carotenoids and therefore has - like all substances of this group - a reddish color. Astaxanthin is extracted from the freshwater algae Haematococcus pluvialis. The red pigment is mainly found in green algae and plankton, but some bacteria, fungi and plant species also produce it. Animals that eat these carriers acquire their reddish color as a result. Well-known examples are flamingos, salmon, crabs, lobsters and other shellfish. Incidentally, after the Haematococcus pluvialis algae, wild salmon have the highest concentration of astaxanthin in the world.
Nowadays, Haematococcus pluvialis algae are no longer taken from the waters in which they naturally occur. They are cultivated in special closed systems. This method of cultivating the algae is not only sustainable, but also ensures that the algae is free of harmful substances and heavy metals. The extraction of astaxanthin from the algae in our product is done without the use of chemicals.
Astaxanthin is a known antioxidant. It can therefore slow down or prevent the oxidation of other substances. Antioxidants give the body protection against so-called free radicals. These are caused by harmful external influences such as cigarette smoke, UV radiation, environmental toxins or the sun. The antioxidant effect of astaxanthin is remarkable. Its effectiveness is due to the shape and length of its molecule and its solubility in water and fats. Unlike many powerful antioxidants (vitamin E, β-carotene, zeaxanthin, and many others) that can become pro-oxidants under certain circumstances, astaxanthin does not turn into a pro-oxidant. Pro-oxidants actually increase oxidative stress. Astaxanthin can scavenge multiple - up to 19- free radicals at once. Most other antioxidants can only scavenge 1 free radical. These properties distinguish astaxanthin from most antioxidants.
As an antioxidant, astaxanthin is
- 500 x more potent than vitamin E
- 560 x stronger than catechins (ingredients in green tea)
- 800 x stronger than coenzyme Q10
- 3000 x stronger than resveratrol
- 6000 x stronger than vitamin C
Natural astaxanthin compared to synthetic astaxanthin:
Our astaxanthin is naturally derived from the Haematococcus pluvialis algae. However, there are also many synthetic astaxanthin products.
- Natural astaxanthin is derived from living microalgae, unlike synthetic astaxanthin, which is made from petrochemicals or petrochemical derivatives.
- Natural astaxanthin has higher biological activity than synthetic astaxanthin.
- Natural astaxanthin is 20-50 times more potent than synthetic astaxanthin.
- Natural astaxanthin is safe for humans and animals.
- Synthetic astaxanthin has never been tested for safety for human use.
- Synthetic astaxanthin is not approved for human use.
