The acerola fruit (Malpighia glabra) originates from tropical South America and is very similar in appearance to our cherry. The name "acerola" comes from the Spanish word "azerole", which means pretty and useful. The acerola fruit is best known for its high natural vitamin C content. This is about 30 times higher than that of a lemon.
The acerola berry belongs to the Malpighia family, originates from Mexico and was already valued by the indigenous Mayan peoples for its immune-boosting properties. Today, this superfruit is cultivated mainly throughout the Americas, especially in Brazil and the United States, but also in other countries such as Africa, India, Jamaica and Australia.
The acerola cherry can be eaten plain and does not taste sweet, as one would expect, but relatively sour. The fruit itself is usually only available fresh in the respective growing countries, as the fruits spoil after only a few days after harvesting. If you still do not want to do without this vitamin C bomb, you can simply resort to acerola powder. This can be wonderfully stirred into smoothies, juices or even water and covers the daily vitamin C requirement quite simply.
