Preventing iron deficiency: interesting facts about the importance of iron in the body
Around 90% of women in Germany do not consume enough iron every day. It is particularly important for women to ensure they have a sufficient iron intake, as they need even more of this trace element during menstruation, pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, men can also be affected by an iron deficiency. A vegan and vegetarian diet in particular can quickly lead to an iron deficiency, as iron is mainly found in meat and fish.
But what does the body actually need iron for? Iron has a function in cell division and contributes to
- the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin
- normal cognitive function
- normal energy metabolism
- normal oxygen transport in the body
- normal function of the immune system
- to reduce tiredness and fatigue
Jujube extract: the power of the red date in traditional Chinese medicine
The date extract is not obtained from the Arabian date, but from the Mongolian red date, known as the breast berry or jujube. This has been cultivated in India since 9,000 BC. In China, it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for over 4,000 years. Today, the jujube is widely used. It can also be found in Korea, Vietnam, Georgia, Afghanistan, Sudan, Brazil, the southern USA, the Mediterranean region and southern Switzerland. As the Chinese jujube is relatively undemanding and cold-resistant, it also grows in mountainous areas up to an altitude of around 1,700 metres. In many cultures, the red date is also known as the fruit of women and is used for a wide variety of applications. Red dates are particularly popular with pregnant and breastfeeding women and after childbirth. We use bivalent iron in the form of ferrous sulphate for this product. divalent iron is better absorbed by the body than trivalent iron, such as that found in plants.
