Melatonin: the superhormone for restful sleep and well-being

The superhormone melatonin is largely responsible for our sleep. Melatonin is a hormone that can be produced by the body itself and is mainly synthesised in the pineal gland of the brain. However, how much melatonin is produced by the body depends on our eyes. The less light falls on the retina, the more of the so-called "sleep hormone" melatonin is produced and released. This means that when daylight decreases, the body receives the information to switch to sleep mode.

Melatonin has been known for over 100 years and has been researched ever since:

  • Melatonin helps to shorten the time it takes to fall asleep
  • Melatonin helps to alleviate the subjective feeling of jet lag if at least 0.5 mg of melatonin is taken on the first day of travelling shortly before going to bed and on the first day after arriving at the destination

Melatonin is highly fat-soluble, which is why we offer our melatonin product dissolved in MCT oil (coconut-based).
Who hasn't experienced this? You're tired, but as soon as you get into bed, sleep just won't come. Your thoughts are spinning and won't settle down, and even when sleep finally comes, it doesn't mean that you will fall asleep again. An unhappy cycle begins. The pressure to finally fall asleep triggers further stress and tension. You often feel very alone with the problem, but that's not true! One in three adults now suffers from sleep disorders.

Factors that negatively influence our melatonin production:

  • Computers, televisions, mobile phones and other electronic devices that strain our eyes (especially in the evening)
  • Smoking, caffeine (tea and coffee) and excessive alcohol consumption
  • Constant stress
  • Certain medications (e.g. ASS, cortisone, beta blockers)
  • Irregular sleeping patterns

When does it become a sleep disorder?

If you regularly have problems falling asleep and staying asleep at least three times a week for a month, this is known as a sleep disorder. A chronic lack of sleep can have fatal consequences. In everyday life, we often suffer from tiredness, loss of performance and fatigue.
The feeling of not being able to cope with everyday life increases and our ability to concentrate decreases. We feel exhausted and, in the worst case, ill. The quality of life decreases and the restrictions increase. Deep sleep is so important, in fact it is vital! Crucial recovery processes take place during sleep. Our brain regenerates, information from the day is processed and stored in our memory. The memory is prepared for the next day and makes room for new events. We stay mentally fit. Our heart rate and blood pressure fall as we fall asleep and during the deep sleep phase.

Our muscles come to rest. We relax. Other benefits of a good night's sleep include a strengthened immune system and balanced hormones. The hormone melatonin in particular is essential for a good night's sleep. Melatonin controls the day-night rhythm. The sleep-promoting hormone displaces the stress hormone cortisol, which keeps us awake during the day.

The body can produce this natural substance itself, provided other essential hormones are present in sufficient quantities. Melatonin is a metabolic product of serotonin. When it gets dark, the pineal gland begins to convert serotonin into melatonin. The two hormones are therefore directly related. The happiness hormone serotonin has a mood-lifting and relaxing effect. If there is a lack of the happiness hormone during the day, the body cannot convert it into melatonin in the evening. Persistent sleep disorders are often accompanied by depression or depressive tension due to a lack of serotonin. An additional intake of melatonin is not a permanent solution, but can help to restore a good balance. Melatonin supplements only increase the melatonin level in the blood for a short time and are intended as a natural sleep aid. Under no circumstances should they be compared with sleeping pills, which act on the body for several hours.
