Product information

What is quercetin?

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid found in many types of fruit and vegetables. It belongs to the large group of polyphenols, which are known for their antioxidant properties. Quercetin therefore belongs to the group of yellow, secondary plant substances. Like other active plant substances, quercetin protects the plant from UV radiation, predators, viruses, fungi and bacteria.

The name quercetin is derived from the Latin word "quercus" for oak, as it was first identified in oak wood. A special property of quercetin is its ability to stabilise the cell membrane. Quercetin is the most abundant flavonoid. It is found in many types of fruit and vegetables, although most of the ingredients are lost when the peel is removed or the produce is heated. The Japanese string tree (botanical name: Sophora japonica) in particular has a very high natural quercetin content.

Quercetin is traditionally used in various cultures around the world. It is a well-known component of naturopathy and is valued in numerous traditional healing practices. The use of quercetin in traditional medicine reflects its versatile properties and the long history of its use. In these healing traditions, it is used for its natural properties and to support general wellbeing.

Natural sources and occurrence in food

Quercetin is found in a variety of plant foods. Particularly rich in quercetin are:

  • Apples: The skin in particular contains high amounts of quercetin.
  • Onions: Red and yellow onions are excellent sources.
  • Berries: Blackberries, blueberries and cranberries are particularly rich in quercetin.
  • Grapes and red wine: Grapes, especially the skin, and red wine contain significant amounts. Leafy vegetables: Kale and spinach are also good sources.
  • Citrus fruits: Lemons and oranges also contain quercetin, albeit in smaller quantities.
  • Green tea and capers also contain relevant amounts of quercetin.
A varied diet with a variety of fruit and vegetables can therefore ensure a sufficient intake of quercetin. It is estimated that the daily intake of quercetin through food is between 5 and 40 mg, depending on the diet. Food supplements can help to increase the intake.
