Vitamin D2 vs. D3: Why cholecalciferol is the optimal form for the body

Vitamin D, which has been researched for decades, is known for its versatile and amazing effects on almost all areas of the human body. Vitamin D (calciferol) is also known as the "sun vitamin", as it can be largely produced by the body itself with the help of sunlight.

There are two different forms of vitamin D: vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D2 is the form that is mainly found in plants, while vitamin D3 is mainly found in non-plant organisms. This means that the vitamin D3 form is also present in humans and is easier for the body to absorb.

Studies based on vitamin D produced from lanolin (wool wax) have shown that

  • Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
  • Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal teeth and bones.
  • Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function.
  • Vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium, phosphorus and normal blood calcium levels.

Symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency

A vitamin D deficiency can therefore have very far-reaching and serious consequences.

  • Persistent tiredness
  • Depression
  • Sleep disorders
  • Concentration disorders
  • Osteoporosis (bone loss)
  • Osteomalacia (softening of the bones)
  • Susceptibility to infections
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Dementia
  • Mood swings
  • Lack of interest
  • Heart rhythm disorders

A vitamin D deficiency can be quickly diagnosed with a blood test. Almost one in three Germans is insufficiently supplied with vitamin D. A deficiency becomes all the more likely in winter.

Causes of a vitamin D deficiency

  • Lack of sunlight (e.g. work-related)
  • Stress
  • Lack of leisure time Advanced age
  • Smoking
  • Diet-related vitamin D deficiency (especially vegetarians and vegans, as it is mainly found in animal foods and fatty fish)
  • Absorption disorders (e.g. inflammation or diseases of the gastrointestinal tract)
  • Diseases with low fat absorption (e.g. exocrine pancreatic insufficiency)

Prevention of vitamin D deficiency

A vitamin D deficiency can often be compensated for or prevented by regular but moderate sunbathing or outdoor activities. For many people, however, this form of vitamin D intake is not possible (e.g. due to work or illness). Taking vitamin D orally (in the form of drops) is therefore a quick and effective way of preventing or quickly compensating for a vitamin D deficiency.
Our liquid vitamin D3 oil can be easily and individually dosed thanks to the amber glass bottle with pipette lid. D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin, so it should always be taken with fat and is already dissolved in maize germ oil for optimum absorption.

Vitamin D3 from lichen? No thanks!

Many suppliers advertise plant-based vitamin D3 from lichens. Lichens are fungi or algae and therefore also contain vitamin D3.
Here are the reasons why we do not offer our vitamin D3 from lichen:

  • The raw material for vitamin D3 from lichen costs about three times as much as that from lanolin (wool wax). For many users, this high price is not affordable. If you find a comparably priced product made from lichen, you should scrutinise how this can be possible.
  • Almost all studies on vitamin D3 and its effectiveness are based on vitamin D3 obtained from lanolin (wool wax). Whether vitamin D3 from lichen with a different chemical structure has the same effect has yet to be sufficiently proven.
  • Vitamin D3 from lichens is not sustainable, as lichens take years to decades to grow. Where do the lichens for the thousands of lichen products on the market come from? Good question! There are not as many lichens in the world as there are offers.
  • Vitamin D3 from lichens is also usually not sustainable, as these lichens are often taken from the natural ecosystem, although many animals (e.g. reindeer) are dependent on this food source.
  • Vitamin D3 obtained from lichens requires an enormous amount of resources and a high input of energy. This is also not environmentally friendly.

Vitamin D3 is best taken with vitamin K2

Vitamin D3 is often recommended in combination with vitamin K2, as the two vitamins complement each other perfectly. You can find a combination of the two products and more information on vitamin K2 here: Vitamin D3/K2 1000 IU / 20 µg
