Melatonin: the super hormone for restful sleep and well-being

The superhormone melatonin is largely responsible for our sleep. Melatonin is a hormone that the body can produce itself and is primarily synthesized in the pineal gland in the brain. However, the amount of melatonin produced by the body depends on our eyes. The less light hits the retina, the more of the so-called "sleep hormone" melatonin is produced and released. This means that as daylight decreases, the body receives the signal to switch to sleep mode.

Melatonin has been known for over 100 years and has been researched ever since:

  • Melatonin helps to shorten the time it takes to fall asleep
  • Melatonin contributes to the relief of the subjective sensation of jet lag if at least 0.5 mg of melatonin is taken shortly before going to bed on the first day of travel and on the first day after arrival at the destination

Melatonin is highly fat-soluble, which is why we offer our melatonin product dissolved in MCT oil (coconut-based). Who hasn't experienced this? You're extremely tired, but as soon as you get into bed, sleep just won't come. Your thoughts race and you can't calm down, and even when you finally do, it doesn't mean you'll sleep through the night or even fall back asleep. An unfortunate cycle begins. The pressure to finally fall asleep triggers further stress and tension. You often feel very alone with the problem, but that's not true! One in three adults now suffers from sleep disorders.

Factors that negatively affect our melatonin production:

  • Computers, televisions, mobile phones and other electronic devices that strain our eyes (especially in the evening)
  • Smoking, caffeine (tea and coffee) and excessive alcohol consumption
  • Constant stress
  • Certain medications (e.g. ASA, cortisone, beta-blockers)
  • Irregular sleep patterns

When do sleep disorders occur?

If you have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep at least three times a week over a month, it's called a sleep disorder. Chronic sleep deprivation can have fatal consequences. In everyday life, we often suffer from fatigue, decreased performance, and exhaustion.

The feeling of not being able to cope with everyday life grows stronger, and concentration diminishes. You feel overwhelmed and, in the worst case, ill. Your quality of life declines, and limitations increase. Deep sleep is so important, even vital! Crucial recovery processes take place during sleep. Our brain regenerates; information from the day is processed and stored in our memory. The memory is prepared for the next day and makes room for new events. We stay mentally sharp. Heart rate and blood pressure decrease when you fall asleep and during the deep sleep phase.

Our muscles rest. We relax. Other benefits of good sleep include a strengthened immune system and balanced hormones. The hormone melatonin, in particular, is essential for good sleep. Melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm. This sleep-promoting hormone displaces the stress hormone cortisol, which keeps us awake during the day.

The body can produce this natural substance itself, provided other essential hormones are present in sufficient quantities. Melatonin is a metabolite of serotonin. When it gets dark, the pineal gland begins to convert serotonin into melatonin. The two hormones are therefore directly related. Serotonin, the happiness hormone, has a mood-enhancing and relaxing effect. If the happiness hormone is lacking during the day, the body cannot convert it into melatonin in the evening. Persistent sleep disorders are often accompanied by depression or depressive tension because of a serotonin deficiency. Taking additional melatonin is not a permanent solution, but can help restore balance. Melatonin supplements only increase the melatonin level in the blood for a short time and are intended as a natural sleep aid. They should definitely not be compared to sleeping pills, which affect the body for several hours.
