What is astaxanthin?

Astaxanthin is a natural substance belonging to the carotenoid category and, like all substances in this group, has a reddish color. Carotenoids aresecondary plant substances with antioxidant effects.Foods such as carrots, tomatoes, pumpkin, apricots, watermelon, and oranges contain these carotenoids. The carotenoid astaxanthin is characterized by its unique ability to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Astaxanthin is extracted from the freshwater algae Haematococcus pluvialis. The red pigment is found primarily in green algae and plankton, but some bacteria, fungi, and plant species also produce it. Animals that eat these carriers acquire their reddish color as a result. Well-known examples include flamingos, salmon, crabs, lobsters, and other shellfish. After the Haematococcus pluvialis algae, wild salmon have the highest astaxanthin concentration in the world.

Astaxanthin can slow down or prevent the oxidation of other substances.Antioxidants protect the body against so-called free radicals. These are caused by harmful external influences such as cigarette smoke, UV radiation, environmental toxins, or the sun. The antioxidant effect of astaxanthin is remarkable. Its effectiveness is due to the shape and length of its molecule and its solubility in water and fats. Unlike many strong antioxidants (vitamin E, β-carotene, zeaxanthin, and many others), which can become pro-oxidants under certain circumstances, astaxanthin does not transform into a pro-oxidant. Pro-oxidants even increase oxidative stress. Astaxanthin can inhibit several - up to19 free radicalsat a time. Most other antioxidants can only capture one free radical. These properties distinguish astaxanthin from most antioxidants.

Astaxanthin: Recommended intake, dosage and storage

For optimal absorption, natural astaxanthin is best taken with a fatty meal. Astaxanthin is typically recommended before or during a meal. Since our astaxanthin is already dissolved in MCT oil, you don't need to worry about consuming a fatty meal when taking it. We recommend taking 11 drops (0.33 ml, 2 mg astaxanthin) of the astaxanthin product once daily for optimal effectiveness.

Astaxanthin doses up to 0.2 mg/kg body weight are considered safe by the EFSA (European Food and Safety Authority).A 60 kg person can therefore absorb up to 12 mg of astaxanthin daily. Most dosages used in studies range between 2 and 8 mg of astaxanthin per day. Once opened, the product should be refrigerated and consumed within approximately 6 months. You can take astaxanthin at any time of day, either on an empty stomach or with a meal. This flexibility makes it easy to integrate the product into your daily diet or health routine.

Origin of Astaxanthin: Sustainability of our Astaxanthin Drops

The main source of astaxanthin is the microalgaeHaematococcus pluvialis, which can be cultivated in special facilities. Compared to traditional sources such as wild salmon or krill, cultivated algae represents a more sustainable option. Algae production requires fewer resources and minimizes environmental impacts and other negative consequences such as overfishing.

The extraction of astaxanthin from the algae in our product is carried out without the use of chemicals. This ensures that our product is not only sustainable, but also that the algae is free of pollutants and heavy metals.

Astaxanthin myths debunked: No lies, no cancer risk!

Unfortunately, astaxanthin is confronted with unfounded allegations that are referred to as "astaxanthin lies."In particular, the claims that astaxanthin could cause cancer lack any scientific basis. On the contrary, numerous studies underscore the diverse benefits of this natural antioxidant. There is no proven link, particularly with regard to the often-cited cancer risk. The safety of astaxanthin as a dietary supplement is supported by extensive scientific research.
