Vitamin K2: The active form for healthy bones and optimal blood clotting

  • Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is very important for our blood clotting and the maintenance of normal bones.
  • There are two natural forms of vitamin K: vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and vitamin K2 (menaquinone).
  • Vitamin K1 is the form that occurs naturally in plant foods.
  • Vitamin K2 is the form produced by bacteria (e.g. intestinal bacteria).

Vitamin K2 is the active form of vitamin K, produced in the body through the conversion of vitamin K1 to K2. In humans, this conversion occurs in the intestines, making a healthy intestine essential for effective absorption of K2. Plant-based foods such as green leafy vegetables, cabbage, and avocados contain the vitamin K1 form. There are only a few plant-based foods that already contain the active form of vitamin K2. One exception is raw sauerkraut. Vitamin K2 is otherwise found almost exclusively in animal-based foods, such as butter, egg yolks, liver, some types of cheese, and the fermented soy product natto.

Some symptoms that may indicate a vitamin K deficiency:

  • Susceptibility to bruises
  • Frequent bleeding from the nose, gums or wounds, often also in the stomach or intestines
  • Declining bone density/brittle bones
  • Poor heart and blood vessel condition
  • A blood test can quickly detect a vitamin K deficiency

Benefits of taking K2

  • Important support for the body's own blood clotting (this protects against excessive blood loss in the event of injuries, for example)
  • Maintenance of normal bones as it helps to incorporate calcium into the bones

Important quality differences in vitamin K2

Not all vitamin K2 is created equal. There is synthetically produced vitamin K2 and vitamin K2 obtained through the fermentation of natural sources (e.g., in our case, soybeans). Synthetic vitamin K2 exists in the cis form; this is not produced naturally in the body and therefore cannot be utilized by the body.

The naturally derived form of vitamin K2 (obtained through the fermentation of soybeans using Bacillus subtilis cultures) is in the menaquinone 7 all-trans form. This form is considered the highest quality because it ensures optimal absorption by the body.

A quick and easy alternative for absorbing vitamin K2 is oral intake of vitamin K2 oil. Our vitamin K2 is already dissolved in oil, as vitamin K2, as a fat-soluble vitamin, can only be absorbed by the body in combination with oil.

Our vitamin K2 oil already contains the active form of vitamin K, namely vitamin K2 in the menaquinone/all-trans form. This means that the vitamin K2 it contains is directly available to the body and does not need to be converted into the active form of vitamin K.

Vitamin K2 is often recommended in combination with vitamin D3 because the two vitamins complement each other perfectly. You can find a combination of the two products and more information about vitamin D3 here:Vitamin D3/K2 1000 IU / 20 µg
