N-acetyl-L-cysteine is the stabilized form of the amino acid L-cysteine and the precursor of glutathione. L-cysteine can be produced by the body itself from the amino acids serine and methionine, but this self-production is not sufficient to cover the requirement. L-cysteine must therefore also be taken in additionally through the diet and is therefore considered a semi-essential amino acid.

When supplemented, NAC is considered to be better tolerated than L-cysteine; in addition, NAC has a higher bioavailability and is less sensitive to oxidation. NAC is not found in the diet and therefore can only be supplied to the body as a supplement.

 

Signs of a possible NAC deficiency may include:

  • Low glutathione levels

  • Increased oxidative stress

  • Inflammation and increased susceptibility to infections

  • Premature aging

  • Brittle hair and nails

  • Cracked and brittle skin

  • Upper and lower respiratory tract infections

 

 NAC is known as an active ingredient in cough expectorants (e.g. ACC). However, there are now many studies that shed light on the most diverse areas of application.
